April 14, 2010. The Louise Lincoln Kerr House and Studio (also referred to as the Kerr Cultural Center) is a facility in Scottsdale, Arizona, owned and operated by Arizona State University. It was originally the house of Louise Lincoln Kerr and was willed to the university upon her death in 1977. In 2010, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. ... Louise Lincoln was born in Cleveland in 1892. She learned the piano and viola from her mother and then studied at Barnard College in New York.[2]. She married Peter Kjer in 1936 (the family name was changed to Kerr) and had eight children. One of them had a respiratory condition, which prompted the family to move to Phoenix in 1936. She bought 47 acres of land in Scottsdale along Lincoln Drive, named for her father.

The Kerr Cultural Center includes two buildings which were originally the home and studio of Louise Lincoln Kerr (pronounced “care”). Mrs. Kerr was an important and influential musician, composer and patroness of the arts in Scottsdale and the Phoenix metropolitan area. Born Louise Lincoln in Cleveland, Ohio in 1892, she attended Barnard College and Columbia University, where she studied music composition. She eventually joined the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra as a violist. She moved to Arizona in 1936. After living briefly in Phoenix and Los Angeles, she built her home in Scottsdale in 1948. From her home she oversaw the construction of the studio/performance hall in 1959.

The center was built by Louise Lincoln Kerr, the "Grand Lady of Arizona Music," in the 1950s as a home and studio. Kerr was instrumental in the development of a myriad of cultural organizations in Flagstaff and the Phoenix area and built the center from adobe dug at the site. The daughter of John C. Lincoln, who financed the Camelback Inn and the hospital that bears his name, Kerr bequeathed her home and the studio, which is a theatre that seats 250, as well as her manuscripts to Arizona State University. Once located out in the desert north of Scottsdale, the urban area surrounding the Kerr Cultural Center and adjacent properties has been developed into condominiums.

Myrtie Louise Lincoln was born to John Cromwell Lincoln (1866-1959) and Myrtle (Humphrey) Lincoln (1866-1913) in Cleveland, Ohio on April 24, 1892. John Lincoln was an engineer, businessman, and entrepreneur who came to Arizona in the early 1930s, settled in the Phoenix area, and was active in mining and real estate. ... By 1959, a house and studio were completed, both built of adobe. These structures contributed to the growth of musical activity of the Valley. In 1960, Louise Kerr co-founded the Phoenix Chamber Music Society. For several years the programs, presented by chamber groups of international renown, were given in the Kerr Studio.
